Kitchen cabinet planning

I have a confession to make. Lots of my friends have started using my kitchen cabinet system. And I hate it.

Oh, I don’t hate that they are using my system. I just hate my system. Maybe I just hate my kitchen cabinets.

My cabinets are small. And I only have a few of them. I have one top row of cabinets and one bottom row of cabinets. This would be okay if I had a 20 foot long kitchen. But I don’t. I have 4 medium size top cabinets (not counting those above the fridge because what use are they?) and 3 medium and 2 large cabinets on bottom. I have no drawers because that area was turned into the dishwasher many years ago.

My cabinet system is simple. Cups and glasses are by the fridge. Why? Well, that’s because that’s where you use them. The plates and bowls are on the other side near the stove. The pots and pans are below those (again, near the stove). The plastic storage containers are below the glasses (near the fridge and table where they are usually used). The middle holds cleaning stuff (under the sink).

So, while my system is functional, it’s not working very well. Maybe because I don’t have enough room for all my stuff. Don’t ask where I keep my kitchen gadgets and small appliances.

I’m seriously thinking of using velcro on the walls.

At the moment I use these for my plates:

They work fairly well, but take up a bit of room. And with 9 cabinets, I need to find a system that uses up every precious inch. I’m thinking of using these:

But once again, I must consider will they take up valuable space? I may not be putting in new cabinets, but I’m completely overhauling these babies to make them fabulous and functional!
