Organizing 900 square feet

In September 2001, I moved into my  house. It was my husband’s house before we were married. It is a 900 square foot single wide mobile home. When we were a young couple with twins in kindergarten, it was not too bad. Since then, we’ve added several pets, another child and the twins are now in high school.

900 square feet is not bad when you are a family of four with two small children.

900 square feet is not good at all when you are a family of five, four of whom are adult size.

I spent the better part of the last 8 years pining over decorating magazines and dreaming Nate Berkus would come and rescue me.

Our plans have always been to buy a larger house. Or build a larger house. Then last year we realized we had only 2 years left of our mortgage. With the economy being what it is, and with us being a single income family of 5, did we really want to take on a hefty mortgage to get a new house? Or to build a larger house? And the twins would be in college in a few years (and presumably moved out soon after haha).

We decided to work on purchasing a larger piece of land and adding on essentially another 900 square feet. Of course, life is what it is and doesn’t always work out the way we want.

So, I’ve decided to stop pining over beautiful houses on television and in magazines and turn my house into my dream home.

I’ve decided to go from cluttered chaos to… well, a house that I love.

I’m starting with the kitchen. In most houses, the kitchen is the heart of the house. It is with us and often resembles the aftermath of a small storm.

As I move along the renovations, I’ll be posting tips and how-to’s based on my experience of changing 900 square feet of total chaos into 900 square feet of tidy organization.
